Mostly referred to as the Indian option to popcorn, makhanas also called fox nuts or lotus seeds, is a tasty, easy to cook, versatile snack.

Makhanas are high in antioxidants and micronutrients and are low in cholesterol and sodium. Being low in fats and saturated fats also makes Makhana an ideal snack for diabetics and heart patients. Essentially, they are gluten-free, making them a superfood, says Avni.

They also slow down signs of aging and are high in fiber. They help remove toxins from the body.

Fox nuts have a high protein content.

This is the reason they are an important part of meals for those who are fasting because a handful of them provide you with energy to last the day. The majority of snacks are either deep-fried or contain a high amount of preservatives and additives. Having a bowl of makhanas will fill you up and also keep the calories in control.

Good detoxifying agents

They help in removing toxins from the body. They are beneficial to the spleen which is like a graveyard for your cells in the body. It recycles the RBCs (red blood cells). The spleen is the nerve center of the immune system since it also stores white blood cells and platelets.

High in fiber

Your digestive process gets sorted with makhanas as they prevent constipation and add bulk to the stool.

Helps in weight loss

Among their several benefits is the fact that they help you reduce weight. For instance, one cup of roasted makhana, which is nearly 32 g serving, just adds around 106 calories. They also have 67% lesser fat than popcorn.

Good for skin and hair

Makhanas is considered a powerhouse of antioxidants. Kaempferol in makhanas fights inflammation and harmful free radicals. This helps in wrinkle reduction and slows down the aging process. It also lowers hair loss and premature greying.

Regulates blood sugar levels

One of the several makhana health benefits is for individuals suffering from diabetes. It has a low glycemic index (lower than rice and bread) and is high in carbohydrates, protein, and fiber that helps in regulating blood sugar levels and countering obesity.
