Fatty liver is a condition when there is an excessive amount of fat present in the liver. If left unmanaged, the fatty liver could get worse with time and lead to permanent liver damage. Obesity, type-2 diabetes, and excess hard drink consumption are three common causes of a fatty liver. Apart from these, there are several other factors that could lead to fatty liver.

However, the fatty liver could be reversed before it turns into a serious thing. Avni Kaul says a few modifications in your diet and lifestyle besides the help of medical assistance could help in the reversal of fatty liver. Let us take a look at these as explained by Delhi’s leading dietician Avni Kaul.

How to reverse fatty liver

A faulty lifestyle is a common cause of liver diseases. Other factors include obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, unmanaged diabetes, excessive consumption of fat, and more. Other than these, excess consumption of hard drinks is a big culprit which might lead to liver injury and failure.

Focus on your diet and lifestyle

One needs to restrict the consumption of unhealthy fats. Instead, opt for healthy fat options such as omega-3 which is available in fatty fish. Intake of both salt and sugar needs to be limited. Consumption of carbohydrates also should be restricted.

Things to eat: In an effort to reverse fatty liver, your diet needs to be filled with fresh fruits and vegetables. Fiber-rich foods should also be a part of your everyday diet. According to one research, the Mediterranean diet is considered healthy for the liver as well as the complete health of an individual. Along with these diet modifications, it is important to stay physically active.

Reduce consuming hard drinks

Consumption of hard drinks is a common cause of advanced liver disease which leads to a failure of the liver when left untreated. It slowly damages the liver and might present symptoms such as jaundice, weakness, and water in the stomach. Those having a healthy liver also need to refrain from consuming hard drinks to maintain their liver health.

Reduce weight

Obesity or being overweight also boosts the risk of fatty liver. Reducing weight is a good strategy to boost liver health. Following a crash diet is not going to give you permanent results. Therefore, follow a sustainable diet that should be prescribed by a qualified dietitian and choose an active lifestyle.

Manage pre-existing health conditions

Uncontrolled health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, poor cholesterol levels, and thyroid problems can also worsen your liver health. Speak to your physician to manage these health issues.
