Foods One Must Refrain from During the Monsoons

During monsoons, one is tempted to drink an extra cup of tea and gorge on a plate of pakodas. This is, however, unhealthy. While the monsoon may bring you relief from the scorching heat, it also brings with it a host of infections and seasonal flu.

It is essential to gear yourselves against these ailments to make most of the pleasant weather. So before you get out on a long drive to that warm, obscure café that serves tea and snacks just the way you love them, read through this article of food items you should refrain from during the rainy season.

Nutritionist Avni Kaul recommends eating fruits so as to enjoy their freshness and use their nutritional value completely. Monsoons mean pleasant weather, but they also bring along a lot of infections. For instance, green leafy vegetables should not be eaten because they have excessive bacteria during this period that may lead to various health hazards.

Through this blog, India’s top Nutritionist and Dietician Avni Kaul talk about foods one must refrain from during the monsoons.

Leafy Vegetables

It might seem counter-intuitive because all your life you have been told about the importance of eating leafy vegetables. But in the monsoon, they should best not to have. The grime and dampness in them make them highly susceptible to germs. So, try to stay away from vegetables such as spinach, cabbage, and cauliflower during the monsoons. Rather, opt for vegetables such as bitter gourd, ghia, tori, and tinda. Ensure all vegetables are rinsed, washed, and cooked well.

Fruit and Juice from Street Vendors

Any fresh food product that has had a long exposure to the rainy air should not be eaten. Roadside vendors usually have the fruits cut up well in advance due to which there are more chances of their being in contact with contaminated air. Stick to fresh fruit juices made at home and drink them instantly.

Tip: While at home, make sure you do not leave cut fruits exposed for very long. Any prolonged exposure to the air may cause contamination. Cut them up fresh and consume immediately.

Fried Items

Fried items should be completely refrain from during rainy season. The excessive humid monsoon weather causes the digestion process to slow down. However irresistible that spread of pakodas, tikkis and kachodi may appear, they could cause gastronomical issues such as bloating and stomach upset.  Excessive salty food also causes water retention.

Aerated Drinks

Aerated drinks reduce minerals in the body, which in turn leads to a decrease of enzyme activity. This is highly unwanted with an already weak digestive system. Have a bottle of water or nimbu paani or stick to warm beverages such as ginger tea. Your digestive system will benefit from it. Also, lots of boiled, clear water needs to be consumed.
